Skin ages for many reasons, one being the slowing down of your natural regenerative processes. When you’re young, your skin has little trouble recovering from sun damage, oxidative stress and inflammation. But as the years go by, aging cells have difficulty maintaining your skin’s integrity.

This is why, to address skin aging effectively, we must also address the skin’s regenerative capacity. One way we can do that is with something called exosome therapy.

Applied topically or injected into the skin, exosomes trigger regenerative processes that have been compromised by years of sun exposure, environmental toxins, illness and other injuries. With exosomes, you can effectively turn back the clock on aging from within.

What Are Exosomes?

Exosomes are classified as cell vesicles. They are tiny bubbles released from cells that help cells communicate by transporting their proteins, peptides and RNA. While all cells release exosomes, exosomes derived from stem cells have been recognized in regenerative medicine for their remarkable ability to promote tissue healing.

In aesthetic medicine, these same exosomes are now a valuable tool for skin rejuvenation. They contain three times the growth factors found in stem cells, making them more effective in promoting skin healing than other similar therapies.

Exosome therapy for skin rejuvenation is quick, virtually painless and has no downtime. Results can last for months and even years. Exosome therapy can address a range of common skin concerns, including but not limited to the following:

  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Skin sagging
  • Age spots
  • Melasma
  • Acne
  • Enlarged pores
  • Dullness
  • Rosacea

How Do Exosomes Work?

Exosomes work as vectors or carrier molecules that elicit a response in skin cells. They improve communication between cells to stimulate tissue healing.

Most exosome formulations can be directly applied to the skin, while some need to be injected. The exosomes in these products can easily travel into skin cells, where they elicit skin regeneration through their anti-inflammatory and cell proliferating effects. Exosomes can also tell fibroblasts to produce more collagen and elastin fibers, which provide the skin with structure, support and strength.

The formulations used in aesthetic medicine contain billions of active exosomes containing a dozen growth factors and numerous peptides.

Benefits of Treatment

There are countless anti-aging solutions on the market, but not all of them come with the benefits of exosome therapy:

  • Visible improvement in fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reduced inflammation and redness
  • Improved skin health at the cellular level
  • 180 percent increase in fibroblast activity
  • 300 percent increase in elastin production
  • A six-fold increase in collagen levels
  • Quick treatment with no downtime required
  • Long-lasting results

The Treatment

Unlike stem cell and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, exosome therapy does not involve donor cells or blood from your own body. Instead, we use exosomes from bio-ethically donated and sterilized umbilical cord and placental tissue, which shortens treatment time.

We will begin treatment by cleansing and disinfecting your skin. Next, we will apply the exosome solution directly to your skin and let it absorb, or we may combine exosome therapy with microneedling or another collagen-stimulating treatment for maximum effect.

The treatment should take around 15 to 30 minutes, after which you can resume your usual daily routine.

The Results

Your results will become noticeable within six to eight weeks post-treatment. You will notice improved healing, reduced redness and general improvement in your skin’s tone, texture and health. There should be continuous improvement in your skin’s appearance over several months as the exosomes slowly take effect. These results can last six to eight months on average and even two years in some patients.

Book an Appointment

We welcome you to contact the Appearance Care Center™ for a consultation via email or by dialing (415) 567-7200. You will meet with Dr. Corey S. Maas or one of our trained providers to discuss your concerns and goals. Our team will carefully look at your medical history and ask questions to see if you’re a good candidate for exosome skin rejuvenation therapy. Although most patients can receive this treatment, others may benefit from alternatives offered at our practice.

FAQs

Are exosomes better than stem cells?

Compared to stem cell therapy, exosome therapy is quick and painless, with no downtime required. Plus, there is no blood drawing or skin harvesting involved. However, stem cell therapy has a proven track record that still makes it a viable option. Some patients prefer stem cell therapy because it involves using their own cells.

Where do exosomes for anti-aging come from?

We use exosomes produced by Vitti Labs. Their products are manufactured under the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) guidelines and FDA Regulations of Human Cells, Tissues, and Cellular and Tissue-Based Products (HCT/Ps) under the authority of section 361 of the Public Health Service Act (the PHS Act). Their exosomes are derived from bio-ethically donated placental and umbilical cord tissue.

How many treatments will I need?

Ideally, patients should receive up to five treatments spaced several weeks apart to see dramatic improvement. However, if you have mild skin concerns, you may benefit from a single session. We will discuss the best course of treatment for your unique skin concerns and expectations during your consultation.

When will I see the results from exosome therapy?

Patients usually notice some improvement in their skin after two weeks, with the full effect taking place about six to eight weeks after the initial treatment. The results continue to improve gradually over several months and with additional sessions.

How long do the results from exosome therapy last?

On average, the results from exosome therapy last six to eight months. To extend the improvements from your treatment, regular sessions once or twice a year will allow you to enjoy your results indefinitely.

What other uses for exosomes are there?

Besides being used in skin rejuvenation and regenerative medicine, exosomes can also help with hair loss. Exosomes were found to stimulate hair follicles and even promote the growth of new follicles. The result is thicker and healthier hair for patients with alopecia or balding.
